Author: Veronica Roth

Published: 2011

Edition Read: Borrowed Library Book

Pages:  496

Grade Level Recommended: High School

Overall: I absolutely loved this book. I couldn't put it down, and I especially love how action-packed it is. Even if this book is the debut it is one that will cement Veronica Roth's career as a YA writer.

Summary (From Amazon) :

In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves . . . or it might destroy her.

My Thoughts: It seems to me that most books are coming out as either a trilogy or a series set. This is great for young readers. They love a series or trilogy they can sink their teeth into. Much like The Hunger Games and the Legend trilogies, Divergent is jam packed with action that will make any reader not want to put it down. Divergent starts with Beatrice Prior just before she starts onto her path to adulthood. She, along with all other 16 year olds, must take an exam that will test her aptitude for one of the five factions of a dystopian Chicago. Candor, the faction of the honest, Abnegation, the faction of the selfless and Beatrice's birth faction, Dauntless the faction of the brave, Amity the faction of the peaceful, and Erudite the faction of the intelligent.

On her aptitude test, however, Beatrice is not assigned only one faction. She is assigned three, an unheard of number, and is told that she is Divergent. Although she isn't told what a Divergent is or why this is such an important thing to keep to herself Beatrice is wracked with guilt before she must go through Choosing Day and choose the faction she wishes to be apart of. Does she choose her birth faction, Abnegation, or does she choose another? On Choosing Day Beatrice finds herself, even to the last minute, deciding what to do next, and she surprises everyone, even herself, by choosing Dauntless.

Beatrice must go through an intitiation period with both Dauntless born and Dauntless transfer initiates. If you are not part of the top ten initiate spots then you will most likely be sentenced to a life of the factionless. Those in the factionless live lives of poverty without enough food and clothes to go around, and little safety and comfort allowed to you by being part of a faction.

To Beatrice, Tris as she renames herself, becoming factionless is a fate worse than death.

As Divergent goes on the story becomes about more then a quest to become apart of a faction or become apart of the factionless. It delves into parts of the human nature, and how the choice to become apart of one faction or another pushes a person to fit into the mold of that faction. The Dauntless, for example, deal in bravery. Fear is something to be overcome, and if you are not brave you are not Dauntless. Abnegation, on the other hand, deal in selflessness. You are meant to place others needs above yourself, and to meet those needs as often as possible.

What I found fascinating about Divergent is the delving into these parts of human behavior. How Roth did an excellent job of questioning what bravery, selflessness, peacefulness, honesty, and intelligence are in relation to a persons actions. Roth really went into this book with the idea of making you think about these qualities and how they are individually approached.

I wholeheartedly loved this book. I read it in a matter of days, and just devoured it. I lost sleep because I just couldn't put it down. (Thankfully it's the summer, and that's okay!) I immediately finished it and ran out to buy the second of the series, Insurgent. That's how much I loved this book. I can also tell you that I'm almost done with Insurgent, and will post up a review on it as soon as possible. If you haven't picked up this book, do so. You won't be disappointed.

Review: Legend by Marie Lu

Title: Legend

Series: Book 1

Author: Marie Lu

Published: 2011

Edition Read: Purchased e-book

Pages:  E-book edition

Grade Level Recommended: High School

Overall: I could not put this book down. It was so much fun to read that I would be falling asleep before I would actually put my Nook away. I had to or else I would just keep reading it! I can't wait to see what happens next in Prodigy.

Summary (From Barnes and Noble) : What was once the western United States is now home to the Republic, a nation perpetually at war with its neighbors. Born into an elite family in one of the Republic's wealthiest districts, fifteen-year-old June is a prodigy being groomed for success in the Republic's highest military circles. Born into the slums, fifteen-year-old Day is the country's most wanted criminal. But his motives may not be as malicious as they seem.

From very different worlds, June and Day have no reason to cross paths—until the day June's brother, Metias, is murdered and Day becomes the prime suspect. Caught in the ultimate game of cat and mouse, Day is in a race for his family's survival, while June seeks to avenge Metias's death. But in a shocking turn of events, the two uncover the truth of what has really brought them together, and the sinister lengths their country will go to keep its secrets.

Full of nonstop action, suspense, and romance, this novel is sure to move readers as much as it thrills.

My Thoughts: While I really, really loved Legend I have to say that a lot of what happened in the book was met with some sense of me knowing what would happen next. The story was really good, and I can't say what it was that was predictable about the book without giving too much away, but it was slightly predictable. That being said I could't stop reading it. From the moment that June was scolded by her older brother for climbing up the side of building to the moment that Day saw the strange X marked on his family's front door I was hooked.

I would read this book at night before bed, just as I do a lot of my reading, but it was always a mistake because I had to know what happened next. I had to know what June would do after the death of her brother. I had to know how Day would wiggle his way out of yet another problem. I had to know, and that quality in this book alone made me love it.

Recommended For: Mid-to-high school students who like Science Fiction-y reads. Lovers of the Hunger Games or Divergent would definitely love this book.

Recipe: (Hopefully) Healthier Chile Rellenos

Image from wikipedia.
If you don't know what that is chile rellenos are ancho chiles or anaheim chiles stuffed with hamburger meat or cheese, dipped in batter and fried. While I love chile rellenos you can just imagine how many calories a hamburger filled, batter-dipped and fried chile relleno is. I love Chile Rellenos. Before last week I hadn't had one in years. If you make them traditionally chile rellenos take a long time to make because they are a lot of work. I decided the best way to make a filling healthy chile relleno was to make some modifications to a regular chile relleno recipe.
For this recipe I used:

4 ancho chiles or anaheim chiles
1/2 pound of ground turkey
2 diced tomatoes
1/4 white onion
1/2 cup diced white mushrooms
1 clove garlic
 mozzarella cheese
1 tbspn olive oil
toothpicks

Roasting the Chiles

1. Preheat your oven to 450.
2. Lay your washed and dried ancho chiles on aluminum foil in a cookie sheet.
3. Once your oven is preheated put your chiles in and set your oven timer to 10 minutes.
4. Every 10 minutes you are going to turn your chiles in order to evenly blacken the chiles.
5. Cook the chiles for 20-30 minutes.
6. Once the chiles finish blackening turn the oven down to 350.

Making the Stuffing

1. Heat your nonstick pan to medium heat.
2. Add the olive oil.
3. Once oil is heated cook the onion until it starts to turn transparent.
4. Add 1/2 pound turkey. At this point usually add about a tablespoon of chicken bouillon. Don't add a lot. It can get really salty really fast.
5. Add mushrooms.
6. Brown ground turkey.
7. Once turkey is cooked remove it from heat.

Putting It Together

1. Once your chiles are blackened put them into a plastic bag to steam. Doing this will help your chiles peel easier.
2. Let your turkey stuffing cool so you can stuff the chiles.
3. Once your chiles have had time to cool remove them from the plastic bad and start peeling. Depending on the chiles you may want to wear gloves so you don't burn your hands. Mine didn't burn at all from peeling.
4. Lay your chiles on the cookie sheet again and cut a slit in the middle.
5. Use a spoon to scrape out the seeds.
6. Stuff the cooked turkey into the chile. Top it off with the cheese.
7. Close the chiles with toothpicks.

Finish the chiles by sticking them back into the oven and let the cheese melt for 5-10 minutes.

Finally, top off the finished chiles with fresh tomatoes, and serve with rice.

Picture Book: For Just One Day

Title: For Just One Day

Author: Laura  Leuck

Illustrator: Marc Boutavant

Leuck and Boutavant send children on a journey to predict what animal comes next in this fun and beautifully illustrated picture book. Children get to pretend to be a whale, a bee, a crocodile and so much more.

I found this book last summer in Austin at a small independent bookstore. I loved it the moment I looked at it. The illustrations alone bring so much life to the animals that the story is introducing the children to. But, what I also love about this book, is that the students really seem the love participating in the game we played afterwards.

Over the summer, I used this particular book as a lesson in my internship. After reading the books to the kids I then turned around played a game with them. I had written down animals that occured in the book and asked one student to act out the animals so that the others could guess. At first I tried to just have the students act out what they thought the animal would do. Big mistake! I assumed the students had a frame of reference, and, even if they did, I was fairly sure they just didn't know what to do. I took this lesson and acted out each animal with the students as a group, and then played the game. It was so much better this way! With an idea of what to look for with each animal the students not only guessed easy and correctly the students doing the acting knew just what to do as soon as their turn came up.

I really enjoyed this book, and the activity. It's so much fun I'm sure moms can participate with their kids at home.

Earl Grey Cupcakes

The other day I found a blog called Bake Love Not War, and found the perfect cupcake recipe for me. Earl Grey Cupcakes. I am a huge tea fan. I love tea, and finding a recipe with tea in it? Oh, man. Heaven. I didn't take any really fancy photos of my cupcakes, but an iPhone photo will just have to do. Seeing as my fancy-pants camera seems just a little too far away from me when all I want to do is eat cupcakes and drink tea.

Unfortunately I am an American so I had to find an online measurement converter to know how many teaspoons and not grams I needed of butter and what the F and not C I needed to preheat my oven to. Over all these cupcakes were super easy to make, and very light in taste. Not too sweet, but tastes just enough like tea.

I loved these cupcakes and highly recommend you try them out too.

Recipe over here.
